Fasted FASTED

Daniel Fast Food List

On the Daniel Fast you eat fruit, vegetables, whole grains, beans, lentils, nuts, seeds and plant oils, and you drink water. Every guide sets aside meat, fish, dairy, eggs, sugar, yeast bread, refined and deep-fried food, and alcohol. Guides disagree on honey, coffee, herbal tea, juice and plant milk, so type any food below to see what four published guides say about it.

If your church hands out its own list, follow that list. This page shows where the published guides agree and where they do not.

What the Book of Daniel says

Two passages carry the whole fast. Everything else on any list, including this one, is someone's reading of them.

Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink.
Daniel 1:12 (KJV)

"Pulse" is food grown from seed: vegetables, grains and beans. This is the ten-day version, and the source of water as the drink.

In those days I Daniel was mourning three full weeks. I ate no pleasant bread, neither came flesh nor wine in my mouth, neither did I anoint myself at all, till three whole weeks were fulfilled.
Daniel 10:2-3 (KJV)

This is where the 21 days come from, and the reason every guide sets aside meat, wine and rich or sweet food. Modern guides read "pleasant bread" as bread made with yeast and sugar.

Your health on a Daniel Fast

One study has measured the Daniel Fast. Forty-three adults kept it for 21 days, eating as much as they liked within the rules. Their calories fell from about 2,185 to 1,722 a day, total cholesterol fell from 171 to 139 mg/dL, LDL from 98 to 76 mg/dL and blood pressure from 115/72 to 106/67. Their weight and body measurements did not change significantly, and HDL cholesterol, the kind you want more of, fell from 56 to 48 mg/dL. The study had no comparison group.

Talk to your doctor or a dietitian first if you:

  • are pregnant or breastfeeding;
  • have diabetes and take insulin or tablets that lower blood sugar;
  • have kidney disease, or take medicine that has to be taken with particular foods;
  • have had an eating disorder.

Three weeks without meat, fish, dairy or eggs leaves protein to beans, lentils, tofu, nuts and whole grains, so the menu here puts one of them in most meals. If you feel faint or unwell, eat. The fast is a practice, not a test of endurance.

More from this site: how much water you need when water is your main drink; protein from plants and how much you need in a day; the fasting timer if your church also keeps hours without food.

How the verdicts are worked out

No verdict on this page is ours. Each one is what a published Daniel Fast guide says, read in full on 23 October 2026: Susan Gregory's food list at daniel-fast.com (2019), Kristen Feola's food list and food guidelines at ultimatedanielfast.com, the Daniel Fast sheet from C3 Church in New Zealand, and the 21-Day Daniel Fast meal planner from Journey Church.

Where a guide names a food, the page uses its words. Where a guide covers a food under a plain heading, such as "All vegetables", "All sweeteners" or "Meat", the food takes that heading's verdict. Where a guide says nothing either way, the page says so and marks it "not named" rather than guessing, with a note on what the guide does say nearby. Six answers are possible: on the list, in small amounts, in recipes only, the author's personal decision, not named, and set aside.

The 21-day menu uses only foods that all four guides allow, with oil and salt in the small amounts two of them ask for, so it works whichever list your church uses. Each meal is one adult serving; the shopping list multiplies by the number of people, adds up each week, and rounds up to a whole can, piece or the next 10 or 50 grams.

Why we built a checker instead of another list

Every printed Daniel Fast list is somebody's list, and most of them leave out the foods people actually ask about: oat milk, sourdough, popcorn, decaf. When two lists disagree, a reader is left guessing which one their church meant.

So this page answers the food you typed under four published guides at once, shows the disagreement rather than hiding it, and then hands you a menu that clears all four, so the question of whose list is right never reaches your plate.

Frequently Asked Questions

What can you eat on the Daniel Fast?

Fruit, vegetables, whole grains, beans and lentils, nuts and seeds, plant oils, herbs, spices and salt, with water to drink. Every guide sets aside meat, fish, dairy and eggs, sugar and syrups, yeast bread, white rice and white flour, processed food with additives, deep-fried food, solid fats such as margarine, and alcohol. The guides part ways on a short list of things: honey, coffee, herbal tea, fruit juice and plant milk. Type any food into the checker on this page to see what each of four published guides says about it.

Can you eat eggs or fish on the Daniel Fast?

No, under Susan Gregory's list, Kristen Feola's list and the C3 Church sheet, which all set aside every animal food: meat, fish, seafood, dairy and eggs. The Journey Church planner names meat on its list to avoid and does not name eggs or fish either way, but its list of foods to eat holds only plants. The rule comes from Daniel 10:3, where Daniel says no flesh came into his mouth for three weeks.

Can you drink coffee on the Daniel Fast?

Under most guides, no. Susan Gregory makes water the only drink and sets aside coffee, tea and herbal tea. Kristen Feola sets aside coffee and caffeinated tea, and the Journey Church planner sets aside caffeine but allows caffeine-free herbal tea. The C3 Church sheet is the exception among the four: it lists coffee beans among its drinks and allows soy coffee and herbal tea as leniencies. If your church hands out its own list, that list is the one to follow.

Is honey allowed on the Daniel Fast?

Not under Susan Gregory's or Kristen Feola's lists, which set aside every added sweetener, honey included. The C3 Church sheet allows honey as a stated leniency, and the Journey Church planner allows small amounts. Fruit is allowed under all four, so dates, bananas and raisins are the usual way to sweeten oats or a sauce without an added sweetener.

Can you eat peanut butter, popcorn and potatoes on the Daniel Fast?

Potatoes, yes: every guide allows all vegetables. Peanut butter, yes under all four, as long as the label shows no added sugar; the Journey Church planner asks for natural peanut butter. Popcorn is listed as a whole grain by Susan Gregory and the C3 Church sheet, and as homemade popcorn by the Journey Church planner; Kristen Feola's list does not name it. Pop it plain or in a little oil, without butter.

How long is the Daniel Fast?

Most churches run it for 21 days, from Daniel 10:2-3, where Daniel eats no choice food, meat or wine for three full weeks. A shorter version follows Daniel 1:12, a ten-day test on vegetables and water, and some churches run seven days with the same food rules. The menu on this page covers 21 days; for a shorter fast, stop at the row you need and use the first week of the shopping list.

Will you lose weight on the Daniel Fast?

The one study that measured it found no significant change in weight or any body measurement. In that study, 43 adults kept the fast for 21 days and ate as much as they liked within the rules. Their calorie intake fell from about 2,185 to 1,722 a day, total cholesterol fell from 171 to 139 mg/dL and blood pressure fell, but HDL cholesterol, the kind you want more of, fell too, and the study had no comparison group. It is a plant-only way of eating for three weeks, not a weight-loss plan.

Who should talk to a doctor before a Daniel Fast?

Anyone who is pregnant or breastfeeding, anyone with diabetes who takes insulin or tablets that lower blood sugar, anyone with kidney disease, anyone on medicine that has to be taken with particular foods, and anyone with a history of an eating disorder. A change to what you eat for three weeks can change how a medicine works or what your body needs, and a doctor or dietitian can help you keep the fast in a form that fits.
